Good Software

There are lots of software out there, but it’s hard to find software that doesn’t do harm to your PC or that you can trust and be sure of, especially if it comes from the Internet. Here are a few links of good software I download every time I deal with a brand new Operating System. All software on this page is free.

Name: AntiVir Personal Edition

URL: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

Description: This is a free anti virus software I always use. It gets rid of malicious software such as viruses and Trojans and actually cleans them away or locks them in a “vault”. It updates itself so there is no need to worry about downloading anything extra manually.

Name: Spybot – Search & Destroy

URL: http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

Description: Spybot uses servers from all over the world for updating, so wherever the spy ware is from you’re always protected. This software has to be manually updated so it is a bit of a pain, but is worth it.

Name: Mozilla Firefox

URL: http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

Description: In my opinion, this is the best browser yet. It’s very reliable, and after a shaky start with compatibility of some web sites, this is one of the most powerful browsers on the Internet. There are add-ons available and themes to customise the browser to go with your mood. Also been proven to be more secure than Internet Explorer!

Name: Apple iTunes

URL: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Description: I prefer this to Real and Windows Media Player. With access to thousands of high quality music, feature to build your own music/video library and advanced features to make CD’s, this really does compliment your music. By the way, you can connect your iPod to it and import practically anything.

Name: Comodo Firewall

URL: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Description: This firewall is the strongest free firewall I have seen yet. It recognises when programs are being downloaded or anything in the registry is being changed, warns you about it and asks what to do with the request. Gets a bit annoying when you try to install anything because it keeps popping up asking for permission (in true Vista style, grrr!) but at least you know what’s going on.

Name: Foxit PDF Studio

URL:  http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/

Description: This is a lot like Adobe Reader, but a lot more. Not only do you get the usual PDF viewer, but if you look further down the download page you will also find a download for PDF editor, which (you guessed it) can create PDF files. It also put an add-on to Microsoft Word that can turn your usual Word document into a PDF file.
